Generally plates that are larger than dinner plates are commonly called course plates/platters. They are used for individual dish. These platters are mostly porcelain/china ware but it can also be large glass or stainless steel 18-10 mirror-finished platters.
Normally a big round platter is used for a cold dish, or a large oval platter for a fish or poultry dish. Quite commonly square, rectangle or round platters are used for vegetable or meat dishes. A deeper course platter would be utilized for dish with gravy or sauce.
